Sailing Program Offers Young Girls From North Minneapolis An Opportunity to Experience Nature and Learn Life Skills
Thanks to the Powered By People Institute’s Summer Enrichment Program, dozens of young girls from North Minneapolis were able to experience sailing on Bde Maka Ska. One of the program’s primary goals is to encourage young girls to leave the house and explore the great outdoors. According to Dorothy Nins, who runs the Girls Taking Action program that participated in the program, “Our founder Dr. Verna Price said go get the girls and take them outside. They’ve been in the house all year and really developed some different habits.”
The program operates with the intention of teaching young girls valuable life skills while experiencing nature. According to Nins, “So many of the terms that are a part of sailing, and the teamwork that it takes to really be a good sailing team, really apply to life.”
Breaking Stereotypes
One of the most significant advantages of this sailing program is its ability to reverse damaging stereotypes. According to Youth Lead Mentor Naya Massey, “Sailing, I feel like is an activity that’s usually, honestly, reserved for rich people. But anyone can sail.”
This program permits young girls from diverse backgrounds to experience something new and encouraging. “It’s amazing to just sail in a boat and relax and get some fresh air,” said one of the young girls.
The Benefits of Unplugging
In today’s digital age, people rarely unplug from technology, particularly young people. However, sailing provides an opportunity to fully immerse oneself in nature without the constant distraction of phones and computers. As Nins explains, “There’s a no-phone policy here while we’re out on the water, and so just to get to know themselves and others, to be outside, is invigorating.”
Sailing supports physical and emotional well-being by aiding in mental and spiritual refreshment. It’s great for your body, your mind, and your spirit.
The Experience of Sailing
The program aims to educate young girls about the intricacies of sailing and instill a passion for the sport. The young sailors learned how to rock boats and navigate through the waters even in the absence of a lot of winds, providing an authentic experience and developing confidence.
Through this program and their experiences, the girls learned that sailing is an activity that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their background or financial status.
Conclusion
The Powered By People Institute, by initiating this summer enrichment program, has introduced young girls from North Minneapolis to the experience of sailing and the outdoors. By cultivating knowledge of the sport and nurturing a love for nature, the program has offered resources to young girls that will undoubtedly enrich their lives.
